At the summit of Mount Nemrut, as the first light hits the stone heads lined up before the burial mound of King Antiochus I of Commagene, nobody says much. Most people who make the trip for that moment land at Gaziantep Airport. Our Gaziantep Airport to Adıyaman transfer picks you up from the moment you arrive: an EcrinVIP chauffeur waits in arrivals with a name sign, drives you to your accommodation in central Adıyaman or in Kahta, and, if you like, folds the Mount Nemrut transfer into the same programme.
It sounds simple. It is not quite. Timing, season and where you sleep are all linked, and getting one of them wrong can mean watching the sunrise from the car park.
Central Adıyaman or Kahta? Choosing where to stay
Not everyone heading to Adıyaman is going up Nemrut. Family visits, business meetings and official postings usually mean central Adıyaman. For travellers focused on the mountain, Kahta makes a better base because the road up starts there. The closest places to sleep to the summit are the guesthouses and small hotels around Karadut village.
The mix-up we see most often in booking notes is a hotel in Kahta assumed to be in central Adıyaman. They are separate towns with a fair drive between them. Give us the hotel name and district and we plan the route around it. For lakeside stays on the Atatürk Dam reservoir or village houses, we ask for a WhatsApp location pin, since some of these addresses have no sign at all.
From Gaziantep this is a long drive. We do not give an exact time, because the route, the number of stops and the season all change it noticeably. We plan at least one rest stop along the way and add more for families with children or older passengers.
Mount Nemrut transfer: sunrise or sunset?
The summit has two terraces. The east terrace is the classic spot for sunrise and the west terrace for sunset; both have statue heads and reliefs. Which one you pick shapes the rest of the programme.
Sunset is the easier option. You leave Kahta in the afternoon, visit the stops along the road and reach the summit in the late afternoon. Sunrise means a very early start and nearly always an overnight stay. Landing and heading straight up for sunrise is not realistic, and we say so from the start. A sunrise programme usually runs like this:
- Meet and greet at Gaziantep Airport, then transfer to your hotel in Kahta or Karadut.
- In the evening, agree the next morning’s pick-up time with your chauffeur; it is set by that season’s sunrise.
- Pick-up from the hotel in the dark, well before dawn, and the drive up the mountain road.
- Arrival at the car park below the summit; from here a stony, sloping path leads on foot to the east terrace.
- After sunrise, give yourself time to walk the terraces. Your chauffeur waits in the car park.
- On the way down, stops such as Arsameia and the Cendere Bridge can be visited in daylight if you wish.
- Back to the hotel for breakfast, then on to Gaziantep Airport or your next address.
Cars do not drive to the very top; the last stretch is a walk. If anyone in your party has limited mobility, tell us beforehand and we will build the day at a gentler pace.
Stops worth making on the way
The road between Kahta and Nemrut feels like an open-air museum. If you see the transfer as more than getting from A to B, we can add these stops to the plan:
- Cendere Bridge: A Roman-era stone bridge over the Cendere stream. A short but striking photo stop.
- Arsameia: Known as the summer capital of the Commagene Kingdom, famous for its rock-cut inscription and reliefs.
- Yeni Kale: A castle on a ridge above the Kahta stream, visited mostly for the view.
- Karakuş Tumulus: A burial mound believed to belong to royal women of Commagene, recognisable by the eagle on top of one of its columns.
- The Atatürk Dam reservoir: A wide sheet of water visible around Kahta, especially beautiful in late-afternoon light.
- Perre ancient city: Near central Adıyaman and known for its rock tombs. An easy addition if you are staying in the city.
Entrance fees for the archaeological sites and the national park are not included in the transfer price; our price covers the car and chauffeur. Opening hours and fees can change by season, so we recommend confirming them with the relevant authority before you travel.
Season, weather and what to wear on Nemrut
The road up Mount Nemrut can close in winter because of snow and ice. The closure date is not fixed from year to year; it depends on the weather. When we take winter or early-spring bookings, we check whether the road is open shortly before the trip and tell you honestly if it is not. In that case the plan may become a transfer to Adıyaman or Kahta plus the lower-altitude stops along the way.
Even in midsummer the summit is cool and often windy, and at sunrise the temperature can be far lower than you expect. Bring a warm layer, comfortable shoes with good grip, and a torch or phone light for walking in the dark. Late spring and early autumn tend to be the most comfortable periods for both the road and the weather.
Vehicles, waiting time and payment
Comfort matters on a mountain road. For parties of two to four we suggest the Mercedes Vito VIP; for larger families and photographers with equipment, the Mercedes Sprinter VIP. Tour groups can travel by midibus or coach, although we assess conditions on the final stretch of the mountain road for larger vehicles in advance. Child seats are available as an extra.
EcrinVIP prices are per vehicle and confirmed in writing before the transfer. Pay in the car by cash or card, or by bank transfer in advance; we issue invoices for corporate travel. Because we track your flight, a delay simply moves your chauffeur to the new time at no extra charge. If the weather forces a change of plan or a cancellation, we work out a new one with you.
Adıyaman and Mount Nemrut transfer: common questions
How long is the transfer from Gaziantep Airport to Kahta?
It is a long journey, and the time depends on the route, the number of stops, the season and traffic. We always plan at least one rest stop, and more for families with children. Instead of quoting exact minutes, we share an estimated arrival window for your day once we have your hotel name and landing time at booking.
Where should we stay to see the sunrise on Mount Nemrut?
The most practical choice is one night in Kahta or around Karadut village, which is closer to the summit. Landing and going straight up for sunrise is not realistic. We drop you at your hotel in the evening, pick you up well before dawn and drive you to the car park, from where a short but steep path leads to the east terrace.
Can you visit Mount Nemrut in winter?
It depends on the road. The route to the summit can close in winter because of snow and ice, and the closure date varies with the weather each year. For winter and early-spring bookings we check the current situation before the trip; if the road is closed, we suggest limiting the plan to Adıyaman, Kahta and the lower stops. We also recommend confirming the site’s status with the relevant authority.
Is the Mount Nemrut entrance fee included in the transfer price?
No. Our transfer price covers the vehicle and chauffeur; entrance fees for the archaeological site and national park are paid separately. The same applies to stops along the road such as Arsameia. Because fees and visiting hours can change by season, we recommend checking the latest information with official sources or the relevant authority before you travel.
Does the car go to the summit, and does the chauffeur wait?
The car goes as far as the car park below the summit; the last section to the terraces is a walk along a stony, sloping path. While you are at the top, your chauffeur waits in the car park, so there is no need to rush. If someone in your group has limited mobility, mention it at booking and we will plan a calmer pace and longer waiting time.
